timber framed farmhouse

LIMINGTON, ME

This modern day timber framed farmhouse was built adjacent to the couple’s family farm, giving them some much needed separation and privacy at the end of the day, while still being able to walk to work. The goal was to design something simple, affordable and highly energy efficient and over the course of the project, all of these boxes were checked.

The straightforward plan includes two stacked bedrooms and bathrooms at the east side of the house, placed to receive the early morning light. An open double height kitchen/living/dining area along the southern side of the first floor is flooded with light all day long, with the small sitting area and catwalk at the second floor borrowing and benefiting from the spaciousness. The north side of the house contains the entry and mudroom, stairway and generous pantry for storing daily essentials out of view of the open living spaces.

The timber frame structure is wrapped in a twelve inch deep Larsen Truss wall system and the roof is constructed in a similar manner, but with more depth, each filled with dense pack cellulose. The house is clad in reverse board and batten hemlock, with a natural linseed oil finish. The timbers were milled from pines that were felled when clearing a lot neighboring the builder’s workshop and the entire frame was erected in one day by hand, with the help of the couples’ friends and family.

The warm wood tones and bright open living spaces come together to create a comfortable and cozy home, despite it’s volume. And when summer comes, the large sliding door gets opened up for easy indoor/outdoor flow to the deck and yard.
